It’s the beginning of the last month in the first half of the year, so I decided to make this post a retrospective one, with the sole aim of making us cast back our minds to the beginning of the year, counting the many blessings God has bestowed on us.

When the year began, one of the things I prayed to do was to be intentional about counting God’s blessings in my life. I went as far as writing in my journal and sharing with friends that this year is going to be an intentional year of showing appreciation to God for what He is going to do. I decided that rather than sulk about the many challenges I might face, turning a blind eye to God’s faithfulness in my life , I will count my blessings instead.

To be honest, it hasn’t been an easy ride and sometimes I fell short sliding back into my old habit of complaining. There were times I shed tears about the challenges I was facing , and even had to pour out my heart in my journal . There were times I felt alone and was even thinking if anything at all is worth it . At these times I had failed to count my blessings, but to number and magnify my problems.

Counting our blessings isn’t because there are no problems. The average man is faced with one challenge or the other, however, rather than making complaints and grumbling, we should choose to channel our problems to God, keeping our focus on Him

The importance of counting our blessings cannot be overestimated. A song writer puts it succinctly, thus: “count your blessings name them one by one, count your blessings see what God has done, count your blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done. Counting our blessings makes us escape the plague of ingratitude, it brings us to the awareness of God’s workings in our lives, and it open us to more blessings from God.

As we journey along this year will you choose to go about mourning and magnifying your problems, or will you count your blessing?
