Some times ago, a friend jokingly told me that I’m the kind of person who will have about five maids who will tend to my needs. The story behind this is for another day. The main reason she said this was because she felt I was lazy and could not handle things myself. (It’s not what you think, I’m anything but lazy).

In a society where having a maid as a woman depicts either being lazy or not being able to juggle responsibilities we are saddled with or not being a woman of ‘strength’ and all the negative views sometimes attached to having a maid, I’m pleased to inform you that the Proverbs 31 woman whom is the role model of many in defining a woman of strength who knows how to manage her responsibilities and attend to the needs of her family had maids, many of them.

Often times women are pushed into a false definition of what it is to be a woman when it comes to the area of seeking assistance to meet up with domestic responsibilities. We were brought up with the do it yourself syndrome and learn how to multitask and juggle all of your responsibilities effectively. There is often a comparison between the women of those days and now, they being used as an example of how a woman can run her home without the need of maids. Asides that, the minds of women, particularly in our clime are conditioned not to expect help from their husbands. They help if they choose to help. If he does, thank God; and if he doesn’t, square your chest and carry your burden. It is your work so do it is often their defense statement.

While I will not say every woman must or should have a maid, I would say every woman should seek for ways to relieve herself from some domestic stress she’s faced with. Many people have the fear of keeping a maid in their homes because of the sad maid stories out there. Relieving yourself of the stress may not entail you bringing a human maid to your home. Life has been made easy for us, there are different types of maids in form of machines that carry the burden we should ordinarily carry. There are washing machines, vacuum cleaners, dish washers, etc.

Perhaps, you do not have the financial capacity to get this things into your homes, there is no need to fret. Enlist the help of members of your family or a trusted person who will not pose a threat to your home. Your husband can also be a good, worthy and complementary help. However, when your husband helps out, let him do it the way he knows how to do it. You don’t have to force him to do it your way, it can discourage him from ever helping. You don’t have to do all of the housekeeping yourself, there is no rule that stipulates so.

Now, if you’re one who has maids or intend to have maids, let’s learn one or two from the Proverbs 31 woman who had a handy number of maids. First, she treated her maids as members of her household and not as her slaves. The same way she provided for her children is the same way she provided for her maids. Secondly, she always sought after their welfare. She was not one to deprive them of the basic need of food, clothing and comfortable shelter. If all you can learn and implement on maid handling is just these two, tell me why your maid(s) will not love you and work with all of their heart.

On a last note, let me inform you that God is always interested in the tiniest details of our lives. You can ask Him to help you find a maid who will not serve as an agent of Satan to destroy your home. Save yourself the fear and headache and commit it to His hands.
